The building is a fine example of Renaissance Revival architecture. Constructed with stone and brick, it features a hipped tile roof with flared overhangs, and a five-bay arcade with Doric columns and arched windows. Its design is attributed to the Supervising Architect for the United States at the time, James Knox Taylor. He is credited with designing many notable buildings including the U.S. Department of Treasury, the Philadelphia Mint, and numerous post offices around the country. Post office functions continued until 1962. Four years later, it started to be converted into a library. After a new library building was constructed sometime before 2016, the Newberry County Historical Society and the Museum Society began a campaign convert the old building into a museum. The Newberry Museum opened in December 2019 after a year of renovation work.
