The Flynn Building is a contributing property of the Union Downtown Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Perhaps the museum's most notable item in its collection is the "Secession Table," which is the table on which the state's articles of secession—for South Carolina to secede from the United States—were written and signed. The decision signaled the beginning of the Civil War, which lasted form 1861 to 1865.
Other notable items include the set of memorabilia honoring a local named Thomas Brandon, who served with distinction during the American Revolutionary War, and items belonging to John Edward Beckham, who was a well-known dress designer in New York City during the 1920s. In addition, the museum houses the largest collection of genealogical materials in the county (it contains more than 2,500 books and microfilm). The Society also manages the historic Cross Key House, which is one of the oldest homes in the county.
