Backstory and Context

The house was built by a man named Stewart Wilson, who may have been a merchant. Merchants had been arriving in Fort Mill since 1852 when railroads reached the village. Over time, the village grew and new houses were built on Main Street. The Wilson House was moved to the current location in the 1920s and it is the only known house on Main Street to have been saved (the others were torn down to make way for commercial buildings). The establishment of textile mills during this period also contributed to the Fort Mill's growth. The Wilson House was a private residence for many years and also home to specialty shops. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
