The Delaware Historical Society is one of the premier resources for history about Delaware. On display are collections of objects, published materials, images, maps, and manuscripts relating to Delaware history and genealogy, dating from earliest settlements to the present. Materials include important documents, literature, photography, and artwork. It operates the Delaware History Museum located across the street.

The Delaware Historical Society was founded in May of 1864 and over the next 15 decades, the organization refined its stated purpose to reflect both a changing society and the evolution of the public history profession. The mission of the Delaware Historical Society today is to serve as the statewide, non-profit organization that preserves, explores, shares and promotes Delaware history, heritage and culture to strengthen our community. Buildings and exhibits located near the site include gardens, historical homes, and statues.
