Visions Art Museum was originally founded in 1985 as Quilt San Diego, a contemporary textile arts museum. The mission of the organization was to present a biennial juried show called "Quilt Visions." This prestigious event was hosted across several different notable museums in San Diego, and it attracted international attention. In 2007, volunteers came together to establish a permanent location for a textile museum in San Diego's arts district at Liberty Station.

Backstory and Context

Visions Art Museum emerged from an earlier organization called Quilt San Diego, which was founded in 1985. This earlier organization sponsored juried shows and exhibits featuring contemporary quilts and textiles presented as fine art. Quilt San Diego gained a prestigious international following through its biennial juried show, "Quilt Visions." Thereafter, a group of volunteers decided to seek a permanent home for a new textile and fiber arts museum in San Diego. They found a space at Liberty Station in the arts district. This continues to serve as the home of the museum today.
Over the years, Visions Art Museum grew to include lectures and workshops presented by skilled artists. The museum also serves as an international community for patrons, artists, and collectors, connecting people through events, juried shows, programs, and exhibits. Additionally, the stated mission of the museum is to widely educate and increase appreciation for the textile and fiber arts among members of the general public.
Recent exhibitions have been based around timely topical themes, such as environmental sustainability and the problematic issues of overfishing, ocean pollution, and climate change. Other recent exhibitions have featured works of art by BIPOC creators. In addition to presenting rotating exhibitions, as well as maintaining a permanent gallery space, there are also on-site classes for artists and members of the public. A museum gift shop provides a space where visitors can browse through an array of beautifully-crafted textile and fiber arts that are available for purchase.
