Peter Stauer House
Introduction
Text-to-speech Audio
German immigrant and lumber mill owner Peter Stauer built this elegant historic home in 1882. It was designed by architect Elias White Hale Jacobs in the Queen Anne style, which was popular in the country at that time. The house was built of brick and features a cross gable roof, a wooden porch with decorative brackets and railing slats, and light and dark stones forming the curves of the arched windows. Many details of the house are attributable to Elias. For many years the house operated as a bed and breakfast but as of 2021 it is used as an Airbnb called Point Anne Place.

Peter Stauer was born in Prussia in 1824. He attended schools in Germany and immigrated to America in 1851, where he first settled in Milwaukee to be with his brother who had already been living there. Stauer eventually made his way to California in 1858 to join the Gold Rush. In 1862, he settled in McGregor and established the lumber mill with a partner. In 1873, the mill was moved to Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin but the lumberyard continued to operate in McGregor. Stauer lived in the house until 1902 when it was bought by J.A. Ramage, who worked at a bank and later operated a successful real estate business. The Ramage family owned the house until 2002. How long it operated as a bed and breakfast is unclear.
