The water remembers: river driver deaths
Introduction
Text-to-speech Audio
We can hear haunting echoes of the dangerous labor of river drivers of the Stillwater Riverside in the folksong “The Jam at Gerry’s Rock.” The folksong tells the tale of young Jack Monroe and his lover Clara Vernon. While working alongside his men to fix a logjam, Monroe was decapitated when the logs rolled over his body. After his body was found, his beloved Clara was so overcome with grief that she joined Monroe in death. She is now rumored to haunt the riverside, so listen carefully and you may hear her wails of grief.
