Text-to-speech Audio
The Henry County Courthouse was built in 1914 and continues to serve as the seat of county government. Architecturally, it is a fine, simple example of the Classical Revival style. The exterior consists of mostly smooth stone but does feature Doric columns, a pediment bearing the words "Henry County Courthouse", and a small pediment above the main entrance. The courthouse grounds include a veterans memorial and a replica of the Statue of Liberty.

Backstory and Context

Henry County was established in 1837. Until the first courthouse building was erected in 1839, the county government met log homes in the community. It had actually been approved in 1837 but the construction was delayed. The second courthouse was built in 1870 and it was located on the northwest corner of the courthouse square. It was built around the time the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad arrived in Mount Pleasant, which prompted the construction of many buildings in the city including the new courthouse. It was used until the present courthouse was built in 1914. The courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.
