On October 22nd, 1858, Abraham Lincoln addressed a group of supporters in Carthage, IL. In this address, Lincoln was campaigning for a Senatorial position and wanted to span outwards from his hometown, Springfield, Illinois. At the time, Lincoln was battling with his opponent, Stephen A. Douglas, and was working to gather any support he can. Lincoln had many different support groups and organizations that went to work in surrounding counties. One group, in particular, was the Wide Awakes group. This group, huge supporters of Abraham Lincoln, went on marches and rallies on Lincoln's behalf. A major reason why Abraham Lincoln campaigned in Carthage was because of his family connection with relatives and close friends living in town.
