Hamden Veterans' Memorial

This memorial was designed and built from initial planning in 1986 to its dedication in 1993 by the Hamden Veterans Memorial Committee. The memorial was designed to honor all local veterans and was dedicated on May 23, 1993 The monument includes three large slabs of granite with bronze plaques that commemorate the 8,522 known local veterans who served the United States during wartime. The middle granite marker is inscribed with the words "Hamden Veterans' Memorial" and has the seals of the branches of the armed forces: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.

The monument is 32-feet long and weighs 22 1/2 tons. Behind this monument, one can find a plaque that recognizes the leaders of the effort to create the monument including the board of directors and the committee members. The monument continues to include additional names, and Hamden Town Clerk Vera Morrison spoke at a recent rededication and said that this event "marked the fifth time names have been enshrined on the large plaque that stands in front of Hamden Middle School. At the first installation in 1993, 7,828 names were listed. In 1995, 202 more were added; in 2008, 191 more; in 2013, an additional 150. The 151 new names brings the total listed to 8,522."
