Built in 1936, the upper story of this building was one of the first stand-alone filling stations in Centreville (that is, it wasn't a general store that added pumps but was built as a gas station). It was originally located on Lee Highway (Route 29) a paved highway "trail" intended to promote motor tourism from Washington DC into Virginia. According to oral tradition, the stones used were salvaged from the Grigsby House which was used by General Joseph E. Johnston as his headquarters in the winter of 1861-1862. The building was moved to this location in 1986 when it was threatened with demolition by the expansion of the highway. The lower level, with its lovely curved water table, was added at that time to fit the building on its new site. Will Crouch, the master stonemason who built the lower level, was an apprentice when he helped to build the filling station in 1936.

The Stuart-Mosby Civil War Cavalry Museum, was located here from 2012 until 2021. It was dedicated to Confederate raiders General James Ewell Brown “Jeb” Stuart and Colonel John Singleton Mosby who first met at Johnston's Headquarters which stood just north of the present site of the building you see today.
