The tiles on this marker present an illustration of the Great Lakes freighter ALFRED MITCHELL underway with a full load of cargo. The 255-foot ALFRED MITCHELL was the last freighter built in St. Clair’s Langell Shipyard on the Pine River in 1900. Sold to an Alabama owner in 1917, the boat changed registry to Belgium in 1919.
