Backstory and Context

Local historian Farwell T. Brown established the Ames History Museum in 1980 as an organization called the Ames Heritage Association. The main reason why Brown created the organization was to save and restore the Hoggatt School, but that project proved to only be the beginning of the community's preservation work and local history research. The Association has taken on other projects including restoring the Bauge Log Home and starting the Story Center pilot museum. The Association changed its name to the Ames Historical Society in 2003 and then to its current name in 2019. The Hoggatt School was built in 1861-1862 and moved to its current location in 1981. It contains furnishings, textbooks, fixtures and other items from the 1860s.
