The Depression affected the community just as it did the rest of the country. As the national economy contracted, the New River Company increased production. The New River Company built the City's most important structures between the Great Fire of 1910 and the late 1920s. With rail interests in Cleveland and Detroit, the New River Company would see a decline in coal production while still surviving through the Depression.
