L.C. Patteson moved his family from Dingess in Mingo County to start a furniture and hardware business before 1910. He experienced a loss of approximately $10,000 (2021, ~$283,363), with only $2,500 (2021, ~$70,841) covered with insurance during the Great Fire of 1910. Patteson would find the capacity to rebuild his hardware store where business prospered. He was also an automobile dealer. Okey Patteson would work for his father in the garage and the hardware store.
