Contrasting historical records of the Great Fire claim the flames that rose to overtake the town were due to a gasoline stove from the residence of W.R. Gray and started in a frame building near the Union Church. Nevertheless, 'The Los Angeles Herald' reported on the tragic event 24-hrs later, “… at least 2,000 homeless persons are sleeping tonight on the commons” and, “… the National Guards, tents were distributed, and an effort is being made to house as many as possible.”
