Backstory and Context
Text-to-speech Audio
This small town at the turn of the twentieth century was centered around the Murray family who owned the grist mill in that town. the Murray family owned the grist mill, the general store, the wheat house, and their own family house in this town. The Murrays ran this water powered mill for three generations where they processed corn and wheat with their mill. This was the last water powered grist mill in Catawba County, and as such it was turned into a historic district so as to preserve this piece of local history.
Each building was built at various times, all having been constructed between 1890 and 1905. The mill is powered by a man made pond, with a dam that allowed for control on the water wheel of the mill. This is an example of mills that used to dot the landscape of the foothills of North Carolina, and were an important part of the agricultural system in this region in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Murray Mill captures an important part in the heritage of this region.
The entire town was converted to a Historic district, where this artifact of history would be preserved and presented to the public. all of the buildings can now be toured, and the district acts as a meeting ground for farmer markets and community celebrations, as well as possesses a fully functioning General store.
