The university itself was dates back to 1876, opening as a Baptist college that educated local citizens and prepared men for the ministry. By the early 1900s, the college's mission had shifted to training teachers. The college's affiliation with the Baptist church ended in the 1950s, furthering the transition from a private college to a public university and community college. At that time, the college also sold its farm to a young entrepreneur named Bob Evans.

Today, the university is known for its education programs as well as its nationally-ranked soccer program. The school is also known for former student Bevo Francis, basketball player who set an NCAA record by scoring 113 points in a single game against Hillsdale College in 1954. This record was broken in 2012.
