The museum traces its origins back to the Red River Art Center, established in 1965 and located in a former post office in Moorhead, MN. In 1996, museum leaders decided to relocate to Fargo, opening the current location in 1997. The museum is located in a former International Harvester warehouse and features a permanent collection of over three thousand works, studio and exhibition space, as well as classrooms and a gift shop.
