The Great Fire of 1910 saw a total loss of over $500,000 (2021, ~ $14,168,158) with only $125,000 (2021, ~ $3,549,039) in insurance to cover the damages. Civic groups immediately started capital improvement campaigns. Samuel Dixon would lend his coal operators to the construction companies. Within less than four months, twenty-seven new business buildings were under construction. All the buildings were rebuilt in brick, stone, or concrete. The Phoneix City of the New River Gorge was born.
