The large schoolhouse at the intersection of Market and Fourth Streets was constructed in 1870. The adjacent smaller school house was constructed around 1905. The large schoolhouse originally consisted of eight rooms while the smaller school house consisted of only four rooms. Grades one through four were housed in the small building while grades five through twelve were housed in the big building. The high school (grades nine through twelve) were eliminated in 1946. At that time, the high school students from Fayette City were given the option to attend Charleroi High School or Marion High School. A few years later, in 1951, the Fayette School formed a jointure with neighboring Belle Vernon, North Belle Vernon, and Marion schools forming the Bellmarette School District.
