Construction started in August of 1908 and finished in December 1909. An addition was built on the east side in 1933 by the Works Progress Administration. The post office outgrew the building in 1976, and moved to its present location on East Kemp Avenue.

The building is an excellent example of Beaux-Arts design. Note the balustraded parapet with the large eagle sculpture, curving swags in floral design, cornice and prominent keystones over large windows. Special care was taken in the W.P.A. project in 1933 to carefully match the limestone of the original structure when the addition was built on the east side of the building. Many post office features still exist in the main entry interior.
