1. One Grove Street (Historical Society of Sleepy Hollow & Tarrytown/Jacob Odell House)

Number One Grove Street is an Italianate-style historic building located in Tarrytown, NY, that was once a private residence and is presently the headquarters of the Historical Society, Inc., Serving Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown. Built in 1848 for Jacob Odell, a successful merchant who served as supervisor of the Town of Greenburgh and was also the first mayor of Tarrytown in 1871, the building retains many of its original features, particularly on the exterior, including a projecting central tower. Visitors are welcomed to the headquarters of the Historical Society, founded in 1889, for tours and educational programs. Number One Grove Street is located in the North Grove Street Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

2. Two Grove Street

Number Two Grove Street, a private residence, is an Italianate-style building located in the North Grove Street Historic District in Tarrytown, NY. Built in 1860 for Marcus Raymond, former editor of the Tarrytown Argus newspaper, the house is constructed of wood, unlike the other brick houses located in the district. Bequeathed to Raymond’s daughter, Lizzie See, in 1901, the home has had several private owners since. The house is L-shaped, with a tower nestled into the angle of the two wings, and a front entrance sheltered by a simple porch. The North Grove Street Historic District, which includes Two Grove Street, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Description

Located within Tarrytown, NY, the North Grove Street Historic District is a small residential enclave of five historically significant houses situated upon a hill overlooking Tarrytown’s central business district. Forming a grouping that extends south down Grove Street from Neperan Road towards Elizabeth Street, all five houses in the district date between 1848 and 1868 and reflect a range of distinct architectural styles popular in the mid-19th century, including French Second Empire, Gothic, and Italianate. Number 1 Grove Street serves as the headquarters for the Historical Society of the Tarrytowns, which also once owned 19 Grove Street, while the other houses remain private residences. The North Grove Street Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
