Text-to-speech Audio
This historic structure was built as a personal home in 1907 for the family of Mr. F. E. Houghton. The home was one of the largest in the area with 8,000 square feet of finished space on four levels and constructed at a cost of $11,900 making it the most expensive home in Guthrie at that time. In the 1920s, the house became the Smith Funeral Home. In 1986, the structure was bought by Becky Luker and converted to a bed and breakfast.

Backstory and Context
Text-to-speech Audio
What is now the Stone Lion Inn was made for F.E. Houghton and his family of fourteen who moved into the structure in 1907 from a smaller home adjacent to the new home. At the time the youngest of the twelve Houghton children was Augusta who was eight years old. Augusta was beloved for her cheerful demeanor and her tragic death deeply affected the community. She contracted whooping cough and was bedridden and later given medicine that contained opium and codeine. This was common at the time and her death was caused by an overdose which helped to contribute to the efforts of reformers to better regulate prescriptions. In later years, the story of tragedy led some to share stories of reported paranormal activity.
The family lived in the house up until the 1920s when it was leased out to a funeral home, and it stayed in the family of the funeral home name until 1986 when Becky Luker bought the property. She was determined to turn the house into Guthrie’s first bed and breakfast with the help of her sons. With the help of her sons, she restored the home to its original beauty.
