In 1831, the Town of Burton was renamed the Village of Allegany, sparking the beginning of the Village of Allegany Police Department. The officers work to enforce laws as well as protecting people's safety here in the community. The department serves the people to this day during patrols, and in their daily lives.

The Village of Allegany used to be known as the Town of Burton. This later on changed, and with it came the start of the Village of Allegany Police Department in 1831.The Village of Allegany Police protect and serve the community and keep the residents and college students safe. They are the first to respond to calls and while they do not have 24/7 coverage, the state troopers and sheriff's help cover what Allegany cannot. The department is made up of 17 officers and crossing guards that are either patrolling or working in schools as resource officers. These officers often go into schools and talk to students about staying safe and saying no to drugs. They also employed the use of the Allegany County Educational Robot to help teach the students and the community.
