Construction of the Carnegie Science Center began on October 5, 1989, and two years later, the four-story science center opened its doors. Offering programs and interactive exhibits, the center is designed to support Pittsburgh families with children exploring the fascinating world of science. Each floor pertains to a different type of science such as H2OH! which centers on the centrality of water to life, or the Robot Hall of Fame. The science center also explores the science of sports to introduce kids to physics and biology. Visitors can also explore the adjacent USS Requin (SS-481) submarine.

The museum is one of four Carnegie Museums in the city. Exhibits were designed to incorporate unique aspects of the city as a way of blending science with other disciplines and the built and natural environment. Given the centrality of water to a city built around rivers, the Carnegie Science Center built an exhibit that discusses the history, science, and culture of river communities while also teaching about fluid dynamics and how objects like boats and fish move and float throughout the rivers. The exhibit also shows how forces like drag and a current can affect their movement.

Capitalizing on the affinity of local citizens for Pittsburgh's local sports teams, the Carnegie Science Center is also home to the Highmark SportsWorks. Exhibits in this area show the physics behind football, hockey, and baseball, while also discussing human anatomy by exploring muscles and other aspects of biology.
