Backstory and Context

The Dubois Pioneer Home is the oldest originally standing building that has not been moved or altered in all of Palm Beach County. This home has been standing since 1898 and has withstood countless hurricanes and storms even with being located directly on the coast of the Jupiter Inlet. The house was intentionally built on a twenty foot mound of shells to make sure the house was elevated enough so the ocean water could not get to it. The home contains many original artifacts such as photographs of the original homeowners, Harry and Susan Dubois, food storage cabinets that were used to preserve food during the early 1900s since there were no refrigerators or electricity, and original cooking utensils.
When the Dubois home was originally built in 1898, it was only one story and had only two rooms. In 1903 a second floor was added with the addition of three more rooms upstairs. In the mid 1920s, Harry and Susan Dubois passed away and in the 1930s, the house was rented out to wealthy families who came to Florida during the cooler winter months. These renters added extra buildings and structures onto the home.
In 2016, the Dubois Pioneer Home was open to the public for guided tours. These tours take people all around the property of the Dubois Pioneer Home and inside of the home showing artifacts and historical stories of the early pioneers of Florida. Archeologists have found fossils, weapons, and tools dating back thousands of years on the property of the home which proves there were other early settlers of this land before the Dubois family. This home contains many interesting and important historical information regarding early life for the pioneers and settlers of South Florida.
