The Hughes Field House is a testament to the power of public-private partnerships in creating transformative spaces that benefit both college students and the wider community. The idea for the field house first came about in the mid-2000s, when Northwest Missouri State University recognized the need for a state-of-the-art indoor athletic facility that could also serve as a hub of community activity.
The university reached out to the city of Maryville and local business leaders, and together they embarked on an ambitious project to create the largest private-public partnership in Northwest's history. The goal was to create a facility that could accommodate a wide range of activities, from collegiate practices and competitions to community events and academic conferences.
The result was the Hughes Field House, a 137,250 square-foot facility with an indoor flooring system, a 90-yard practice turf, a 300-meter indoor track, and ample spectator seating. But the field house is more than just an athletic facility – it also boasts tier-leveled classrooms, making it the perfect place to host academic and career-related events.
The Hughes Field House was completed in 2018, after years of planning and fundraising. The cost of the project was 20 million dollars, with funding coming from the university, the city, and private donors. This investment has paid off in countless ways, as the field house has become a hub of activity for both the college students of Northwest Missouri State and the citizens of Maryville.
