Houston Arboretum and Nature Center
Introduction
Text-to-speech Audio
Established in 1964, the Houston Arboretum and Nature Sanctuary is an outdoor educational site that also provides urban wildlife habitat. It comprises the western edge of Memorial Park, which was founded in 1924 after the Hogg family donated a tract of land to the city. Previously, the land was part of Camp Logan, a U.S. military training ground during World War I, and Memorial Park was named in honor of fallen soldiers. Today, the 155-acre arboretum includes miles of walking and cycling trails through forest, wetland, pond, and meadow habitats. A Nature Center building hosts summer camp programs and student field trips, with hands-on interactive museum exhibits in the Discovery Room.
