Jawbone by Joe Norman

Steel and Concrete, A concrete and steel representation of an elk jawbone. Located on the east of end of Main Street in the heART of Lyons.

Jawbone' is inspired by an elk bone I found while lost, thirsty, and a little worried in a canyon outside of Pagosa Springs, CO. It is made from a combination of concrete and steel, which I then ground back to reveal the armature.'

Artist Statement: I enjoy using several themes that I previously thought were mutually exclusive (yet in fact may not be) and combining them in a sculpture. Having multiple ideas coexist in a single piece is a useful metaphor for the ecosystem of thought that public art empowers and protects. My intent in this project is to make work that is both intellectually and emotionally engaging and serves to strengthen the health of the community where it is placed. Some background on me: for fourteen years I have been a full-time sculptor, focusing on site-specific projects informed by the intersection of the natural and human-made environment. My studio is in Loveland, just north of Lyons.
