Turn to your right, and cross Pennsylvania when safe. We’ll follow this sidewalk down the hill and across the next street.

More often than not strikes ended in defeat, since the bosses knew any concession, once granted, would be hell on earth to undo. And so it went everywhere. Small drops in a bucket, drip drip drip, until it spills over.

The garment district remained strong for more than fifty years, but began to decline in the 1950s. Supply chains spread out, headed overseas where labor was much cheaper and where there were no unions to contend with. Factory space gave way to more profitable ventures, like corporate offices, or just as likely became vacant during the great urban hollowing following the Civil Rights Movement and the attendant white flight. Now this area is like every part of downtown, a homogenous hodgepodge of mixed residential and commercial buildings. Lofts up top, businesses below, maybe some retail or dining on the street.

Same way it is all across America.

When you reach the end of the block, use the crosswalk to safely cross to the other side of Jefferson Street.
