Mrs. Xenia Pruitt was renowned for her exceptional baking skills, warm hospitality as a caterer, and lively spirit. Together with her daughter, Mrs. Addie Douglas, she brought joy and warmth to gatherings, filling the air with the aroma of delicious foods and the ambiance of true Southern hospitality.
Mrs. Sue Weeden operated a popular restaurant on West Holmes Avenue, initially preparing the food in her home. As Mrs. Weeden aged, Mrs. Pruitt stepped in to keep the restaurant thriving, preparing dishes from her own kitchen on Madison Avenue. Visitors traveled from near and far to enjoy Mrs. Pruitt's cooking and gracious service. Her pastries, especially, became the sought-after treats for after-dinner desserts, and she was frequently recommended to prepare meals for well-known officials and notable guests passing through the state.
Mrs. Pruitt’s passion for baking led her to compete in the Birmingham State Fair baking contests in 1890 and 1891, following years of winning awards in local competitions. Notably, she catered the celebration party for Lily Flagg, William Matthews’ prized cow, which won the grand prize at the 1892 Chicago World’s Fair as the greatest butter producer.
A devoted member of the Primitive Baptist Church, Mrs. Pruitt’s funeral was attended by Elders Elias Patton and Felix Jordan, honoring her legacy of service and community.
Mrs. Pruitt’s life added a rich flavor to Huntsville’s history. Her contributions to the culinary and social life of her city left a lasting, “sweet taste of love” in the hearts of many.
