Henderson Hill was born in Alabama in 1860. He married three times. He married his first wife, Puss Sledge Hill, in 1875, and she passed away in 1897. In 1900, he married Mary Ragland Hill. Later he married Emily Edith Hill, with whom he had two children, a daughter named Jany and a son named Dock.

A well-respected and influential figure, Mr. Hill built a frame cottage on Holmes Street and served for several years as Sexton of the colored cemetery. He was also a longtime President of the Huntsville Benevolent Society, an organization primarily composed of women who provided care for one another in times of illness and hardship and ensured dignified burials for deceased members.

In 1884, Mr. Hill became President of the Huntsville Republican Precinct Club, and in 1888, he was selected as an Alternate Delegate to represent the precinct at the Republican County Convention. In 1885, he and several other citizens organized a grand excursion from Huntsville to Iuka, Mississippi, to support the Independent Order of Immaculates.

Henderson Hill passed away at his home on Church Street on May 4, 1915, and was laid to rest in Glenwood Cemetery.
