In May 1863, the Bureau of the Colored Troops was established by the United States War Department to organize African Americans into regimental units. This initiative included both free Black individuals and enslaved people. The troops were formed into various branches, including cavalry, artillery, and infantry. During the Civil War, approximately 180,000 African Americans served in these regiments, making significant contributions to the Union's efforts.

Samuel Drake was born on August 12, 1839, in Madison, Alabama, to Jasper and Nancy Drake. Besides Samuel, their children included Harriett, Henry, and Narcissa. Samuel's children were Henry and Susan Drake.

He enlisted on 30 Nov 1863 in Alabama for a period of three years. He served as a private during the Civil War in Company G, Infantry 17 in the U.S. Colored Troops. Around May or June 1864, Private Drake was transferred to the Invalid Corps. On July 1864, he was transferred to Company E, 17th Infantry.

His wife's headstone is north of the western curve of the top of the cemetery road in an opening behind a row of trees lining the road on the north. Google Earth cannot display the location very well but see the image attached.
