In the 1870s and 1880s, one of Huntsville's prominent citizens was William Henry Pleasants. Born enslaved in Alabama, Mr. Pleasants used his natural business acumen to earn enough money to purchase his freedom from his enslaver, Wiley Schrimsher, prior to the Civil War. By 1870, at 28 years old, he was a barber in Huntsville, with a wife, Kate, and two children, William and Maggie. His personal estate at the time would be valued at approximately $9,630 in today’s currency, and his real estate holdings would be worth around $24,070.

In his barbershop, Mr. Pleasants served both Black and white patrons, drawing clientele from across the community. His success made him a man of wealth and influence. In 1881, he advertised his barber shop, The Tennessee Gem, in the Huntsville Gazette, promising satisfaction to any customer who visited. He was renowned as a first-rate barber.

Tragically, on Friday, February 10, 1882, he succumbed to malaria at the age of 41. Since the end of the Civil War, he had been a respected leader among Huntsville's Black residents. At the time of his passing, he held a significant position in the Immaculate Order, a fraternal organization, and was honored with a burial by its members. His funeral service took place at 2:00 pm at Lakeside Methodist Episcopal Church, conducted by Reverend Jesse D. Hay and Reverend T.W. Coffee.
