"The Fist" Joe Louis Monument

This monument to Joe Louis, known informally as "The Fist," has also become one of the symbols of the city of Detroit. The monument was created by sculptor Robert Graham who was inspired by the symbolic nature of a closed fist as a symbol of the boxer and his fight against racial injustice. The monument was dedicated on October 16, 1986. The sculpture extends 24 feet and is suspended by a triangular frame.
