Founded in 1988, the North Carolina Estuarium is the first museum of its kind in the world. Estuaries are were rivers meet seas and North Carolina has the second most in the country (Louisiana has the most). These ecosystems are abundant in wildlife and as such have attracted people for millennia. The museum features exhibits explore cultural history of North Carolina's estuaries as well as the natural science of these important ecosystems. The museum also offers boat tours.
