The Iron Mountain Iron Mine opened in the mid-1950s by three businessman who wanted to promote local mining history. Visitors are taken on train ride 2,600 feet underground in an exploratory tunnel dating from the 1800s. Visitors will see the "big stope" area of the mine that 600 feet long, 300 feet wide and 180 feet tall. It was here that the mine produced the majority of its iron ore. The Milwaukee Iron Mine Company started mining iron here in 1877. Other companies owned it until 1945 when it closed down. The train was installed in 1965.
