On September 5, 1962 a fragement of the disintegrated Sputnik IV, a Russian aircraft, crashed near the intersection of North 8th and Park Streets. The 20 1/2 pound piece imbedded in the pavement was still hot when found by two police officers cruising the area. The piece was later sent to national authorities for analysis and disposition. It was verified as authentic and sent back to Russia. Replicas were made and given to the Rahr West for display purposes.
