The Canal Basin Park marks the historic location of one of the main transfer points for canal boats using the Allegheny-Portage inclined-plane rail system. The park includes a visitors' center, a reconstruction of one of the locks used in the canal-to-rail transfer system and one of the engines used on the inclined planes. Canal boats and other essentials of the system such as the mule paths are also integrated into the park's recreation offerings. Today, there is no water in the basin, but the railway tracks and the canal waterway run parallel to each other here.
