This is the site where the concept of the first annual Memorial Day holiday emerged in 1866. Lizzie Rutherford and Mary Ann Williams, the mothers of the holiday, are buried here. The cemetery is also the resting place of John Pemberton, the inventor of Coca-Cola, General Henry Benning, the namesake of Ft. Benning, and General Paul Semmes, a casualty of the battle of Gettysburg.
