Royals Hall of Fame 

In 1967, voters in Jackson County approved the bonds for the construction of Truman Sports Complex that included a football stadium for the Kansas City Chiefs and a baseball stadium for the Kansas City Athletics. This was a unique proposal as many cities were building multi-use stadiums and the location of the two stadiums next to one another invited questions about the wisdom of not following this trend. When the stadium opened on April 10, 1973, it was celebrated as one of the game's most beautiful ballparks. And while many recent ballparks have surpassed the cost of the construction of this stadium, it retains its reputation owing to its classic design and incorporation of new technologies and updated seating areas. The ballpark has been home to the 1973 and 2012 All-Star Games, three no-hitters, playoff games in 1976, '77, '78, '80, '81, '84, '85, 2014 and '15 with 13 World Series tilts in 1980, 1985, 2014 and 2015. The facility was officially renamed in honor of team owner Ewing M. Kauffman in a ceremony at the stadium on July 2, 1993.Beginning with the 2007 season the Royals had a red seat placed in the stadium among the all-blue seats behind home plate to honor Buck O'Neil. O'Neil played for the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro League from 1937 to 1955 and was the leading force behind the creation of the Negro Leagues museum in Kansas City. The team selects one local person who embodies the spirit of Buck O'Neil selected from community nominees to sit in that seat, formerly occupied by O'Neil, at each home game. The seat is located behind home plate in Section 127 and honorees are recognized at each game for their contributions. Kauffman, who founded Marion Laboratories in his mother's basement and built it into a diversified health care company with sales reaching nearly one billion dollars, possessed a sense of daring and an innate ability to motivate those around him. "Mr. K" also gave much personal attention to the Kansas City community, an important philosophy that was incorporated into the Royals organization. Among the awards Mr. Kauffman won for his leadership include the Kansas City Press Club's 1973 Man of the Year, an induction into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, and being named one of 20 finalists for enshrinement in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008. Mr. K passed away on August 1, 1993.

Kauffman Stadium opened in 1973 and is home to the Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball. It was built to replace Municipal Stadium, which was constructed in the 1920s and was home to the Kansas City Blues and the Kansas City Monarchs. Kauffman Stadium is part of the Truman Sports Complex along with Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League. The stadium first opened as Royals Stadium but since 1993, the ballpark has been named in honor of the late Ewing Kauffman, the founder and first owner of the Royals, as well as a leading businessman and philanthropist in the Kansas City area. Upon his passing, Kauffman donated the team to the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation under the condition that the team would be sold to owners who would keep the team in Kansas City with all proceeds from the sale of the team benefiting local charities. The stadium is well known for the water fountains along the outfield fence which formed the largest privately-funded water fountain in the world when the stadium opened. The stadium also features a ten-story scoreboard topped by a gold crown that can be seen by traffic along I-70.

The Royals became Kansas City’s Major League Baseball team in 1968 after being granted an expansion team the year prior. Previously, the Athletics were Kansas City’s team after being transferred from Philadelphia in 1954. Fans showed up in record numbers, but owner Arnold Johnson’s motive for profit over the team and fans became apparent. In December 1960, Charles “Charlie” O. Finley purchased controlling interest in the team, who fans regarded as the savior of baseball in Kansas City. He invested in improvements for Municipal Stadium and uniforms for the team, with the intention to keep the A’s permanently in KC. However, due to continuously losing seasons and poor fan attendance, Finley was actively looking to relocate the team, even despite the approval of a $102 million bond measure to build a new sports complex. At the end of the 1967 season, the Athletics once again finished in last place, and the American League granted the move of the team to Oakland, California. In early 1968, the MLB approved to expand the league and Kansas City was granted one of four expansion teams. After beating out other local interests, philanthropist and successful owner of Marion Laboratories, Ewing “Mr. K” Kauffman became the owner of the new franchise. Inspired by the economic boost this would offer the community and with encouragement from his wife Muriel, Kauffman made a commitment to restore the culture of the baseball establishment and give back to Kansas City. Kauffman had one year to get his new MLB club started. After holding a naming contest, fan suggestions included the Plowboys, Pythons, Canaries, Bovines, Batmen, various Indian tribes, the Caps, and even worse the Kauffs, Kauffies, and Kauffers, but Ewing chose The Royals in honor of the American Royal livestock show held annually in KC since 1899. Blue and White were chosen as team colors which were the colors of his horse racing stable. The Royals became the first team to offer insurance, a pension, and profit sharing to members of the office staff. He hired a booster sales team called the Royal Lancers, which used an aggressive marketing approach and included some of the incredible sales force from Marion Labs - setting the American League record for ticket sales. He also hired Cedric Tallis as the Royals first general manager and recruited a management team of Lou Gorman, Syd Thrift, Jack McKeon, John Schuerholz and Herk Robinson, who all went on to become general managers of Major League clubs. After playing their first season in 1969, the Royals were the best of the four new expansion teams - outfielder Lou Piniella was named Rookie of the Year. In 1970, Kauffman opened the Royals Baseball Academy in Sarasota, Florida for the improvement of his players. This innovative approach to training proved successful as the following season would be the Royals first winning season, placing second in the Western Division. The Academy closed after a few years due to cost, but the techniques and technology introduced and developed by the Academy became standard practice across the game, including the use of radar guns, pitching machines, videotaping, mandatory stretching, strength training equipment, and even stopwatches. The new Royals Stadium opened in 1973, the only facility built solely for major league baseball between 1962 and 1991. The team continuously improved, seeing many postseason games including division wins in 1976, 1977, 1978, and 1980, and the teams first World Series championship win in 1985. The Hall of Fame was established the following year to celebrate the accomplishments and contributions to Royals baseball. In 1990, Kauffman regained complete control of the Royals, but the team would see many changes and struggles in the coming decades. Mr. K was inducted into the Royals Hall of Fame on May 23, 1993 which marked his last public stadium appearance. As Ewing grew older, he also worried about the fate of the team. He wanted to keep the Royals in Kansas City after his passing, so he created a succession plan by donating the team to the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation, with stipulations that the team had to remain in Kansas City and the proceeds from the sale would be donated to local charities. Royals Stadium was then renamed to Kauffman Stadium on July 2 and is the only American League stadium named in honor of a person. After Mr. Kauffman’s passing on August 1, 1993, David Glass became the interim CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors. Glass later became the sole owner on April 18, 2000. In 2014 after decades of losing seasons, the Royals saw their first postseason game since 1985. They advanced to the World Series, however, the season ended in loss after seven energizing games. In 2015, the team made franchise history with back-to-back World Series appearances and finished the season with a win. The Royals saw new leadership again in November 2019 when John Sherman and a group of more than twenty local investors led by Sherman bought the team from Glass.

In 1968, Kansas City was granted one of the four expansion teams in Major League Baseball. Local philanthropist and entrepreneur Ewing Kauffman purchased the team in a commitment to give back to the community. Kauffman used innovative approaches to improve the players and take care of his staff, just as he did in business. The Royals, named for Kansas City’s annual American Royal barbeque contest, became the best of the new expansion teams. After years of training and improvement, the Royals made consecutive postseason showings in the late 70s, also winning division games. They won their first World Series Championship in 1985, a feat they wouldn’t see again for three decades. The 1990s proved to be strenuous on the team in play and ownership. Mr. K passed away in 1993, just a month after the Royals Stadium was renamed in his honor. The new CEO David Glass had trouble turning the team around but in 2014 the Royals advanced to the World Series, which resulted in a loss. However, the team made franchise history in 2015 with back-to-back World Series appearances, this time clinching the championship win. New owner John Sherman took over in 2019 and hopes to bring stability and respect back to the franchise.

History of the Kansas City Royals

Frank White, Jr. was born on September 4, 1950 in Greenville, Mississippi. His father was a Greenville-born World War II veteran who played amateur baseball. His mother was the daughter of Mississippi Delta sharecroppers. When White was six years old, he and his family moved north to Kansas City. There, his father found work at various automotive dealerships, while his mother labored in the city’s Garment District. White learned the game of baseball from both his father and the pick-up games that he played with the neighborhood kids before beginning to participate in organized baseball at the age of nine. Later, he attended Lincoln High School, where he was a member of the school’s basketball and football teams. Since the school lacked a baseball team, White honed his skills on the diamond playing in the Connie Mack and Ban Johnson leagues. After graduating from high school in 1968, he worked for Hallmark Cards and Metals Protection Plating in Kansas City, and briefly attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In 1970, White attended a tryout at Municipal Stadium for the Kansas City Royals baseball newly opened baseball academy in Florida. After impressing with his raw athletic ability, he earned a spot at the academy. Later that same year, White signed a contract with the Royals and began playing in the club’s farm system, spending time with the organization’s minor league affiliates in Jacksonville, Omaha, and San Jose. In the middle of the 1973 season, he received that for which all minor league prospects hope, a call-up to the major leagues. White ultimately remained with the Royals for the entirety of his eighteen-year big league career. In that time, he made a case for being one of the best second basemen of all time. During his career, White won eight Gold Glove Awards and one Silver Slugger Award. He also led all American League second basemen in fielding percentage three times. In the 1980 American League Championship Series (ALCS), White hit .545 to win the ALCS Most Valuable Player Award and power the Royals past the New York Yankees to a World Series appearance. Five years later, in the 1985 World Series, he collected six RBIs to help the club defeat the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games and clinch the franchise’s first World Series title. Following the 1990 season, the five-time All-Star retired, finishing his lengthy major league career with 2,006 hits, 886 RBIs, and a batting average of .255.On July 31, 2004, the Royals unveiled a statue of White outside Kauffman Stadium. Designed by world-renowned artist Harry Weber, who later designed the statues of the Kauffmans and former Royals manager Dick Howser, the life-sized bronze sculpture depicts the club’s former second baseman in action on the diamond. Dressed in his Royals uniform, he contorts his body in mid-air to throw the ball to first base, as if avoiding a sliding opponent to turn a double play. In 2009, after Kauffman Stadium underwent significant renovations, the organization moved the statue, along with that of George Brett, inside the ballpark to the new right centerfield concourse.

Frank White Statue

Richard Dalton “Dick” Howser was born on May 14, 1936 in Miami, Florida. The eldest of four children, he grew up in West Palm Beach. Howser attended Palm Beach High School, where he starred on the school’s baseball team during his junior and senior years. Despite not being heavily recruited in high school, he received an offer to sign a minor league baseball contract. Desirous of one day becoming a teacher, Howser decided instead to attend college and subsequently enrolled at Florida State University. During his sophomore year in Tallahassee, he tried out for the Seminoles baseball team and made it. In his three years playing shortstop for Florida State, Howser compiled a .375 batting average and twice earned All-American honors. After graduating with his degree in 1958, he signed a contract with the Kansas City Athletics. Howser then spent a few seasons in the organization’s farm system before making his major league debut on Opening Day of the 1961 season. The shortstop averaged .280 at the plate, stole thirty-seven bases, and led the American League in putouts his rookie year, but injuries significantly limited his playing time the next two seasons, and the Athletics dealt him to the Cleveland Indians in May 1963. Despite having a bounce-back season in 1964, in which he hit .256 and raked in 52 RBIs, Howser could not stay healthy over the course of the subsequent two seasons. In December 1966, the Indians traded him to the New York Yankees. While in the Big Apple, injuries limited his playing time once again, and Howser hung up his cleats after the 1968 season. He finished his playing career with a .248 batting average and 105 stolen bases on 139 attempts. Howser began his coaching career the following year, serving as the Yankees third-base coach. He held the position through the 1978 season, after which he returned to Tallahassee to become the head baseball coach at his alma mater. In Howser’s one year at the helm, the Seminoles posted a 43-15-1 record. In 1980, he became the manager of the New York Yankees. Despite leading the team to an AL East title and a berth in the American League Championship Series (ALCS), Howser had a falling out with owner George Steinbrenner, who fired his skipper after just one season. Late in the 1981 season, the Kansas City Royals hired him to replace Jim Frey as the team’s manager. During his time with the Royals, Howser guided the club to three postseason appearances, two AL West titles, and a 404-365 record. In 1985, he and team reached the World Series, where they defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games to capture the first World Series title in franchise history. The following season, the Royals skipper was diagnosed with brain cancer and underwent surgery. After a failed attempt to return to the team in the spring of 1987, he resigned. Howser succumbed to the disease a few months later on June 17. His remains were buried at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Tallahassee. In 2009, the Royals commissioned world-renowned sculptor Harry Weber to design a statue of Howser. Unveiled on April 10, 2009 in Kauffman Stadium’s new right centerfield concourse, the larger-than-life-sized bronze sculpture depicts the club’s former manager in the dugout. Sporting a warm-up jacket over his Royals uniform, he rests his right foot on a dugout step and leans forward with his arms crossed on his right thigh while he observes the action on the field.

Dick Howser Statue

George Howard Brett was born the youngest of four boys to Jack and Ethel Brett on May 15, 1953 in Glen Dale, West Virginia, just south of Wheeling. His father was a Brooklyn-born accountant who served in the U.S. Army during the Second World War. His mother was a bookkeeper for a furniture company. Like Brett, all three of his older brothers went on to play baseball professionally at some level. Ken, the Bretts’ second oldest, spent fourteen years in the majors with ten different teams as a pitcher. John and Bobby, the oldest and third oldest of the Brett brothers, respectively, both played for a time in the minor leagues. When George Brett was still a toddler, he and his family moved out west and settled in El Segundo, California. He later attended El Segundo High School, where he played on the school’s baseball and football teams. In 1971, the Kansas City Royals selected Brett in the second round of that year’s Major League Baseball Draft. After a relatively brief stint in the club’s farm system, he made his major league debut on August 2, 1973 and won the starting role at third base the following season. Brett ultimately spent his entire twenty-one-year big league career with the Royals. In that time, he captured three American League batting titles and three Silver Slugger Awards. Brett’s best year came in 1980, when he nearly became the first player since Ted Williams in 1941 to finish with a batting average of .400 or better. Despite a late season slump that led him to finish the season with a .390 batting average, he nevertheless earned the American League Most Valuable Player Award. Five years later, Brett collected his first and only Gold Glove Award, and hit .335 with thirty home runs and 112 RBIs to power the Royals to the World Series, where he and his teammates defeated the Cardinals in seven games to clinch the franchise’s first World Series title. Following the 1993 season, the thirteen-time All-Star retired. Finishing with 3,154 hits, 317 home runs, and a .305 batting average, Brett is only one of four players in major league history (the others being Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, and Stan Musial) with 3,000 hits, 300 home runs, and a .300 or greater career batting average. In 1999, the Baseball Writers’ Association of America elected him to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. He remains the only player to represent the Royals in Cooperstown.  On August 11, 2001, before their game against the Detroit Tigers, the Royals unveiled a statue of Brett outside Kauffman Stadium. Designed by artist Kwan Wu, the life-sized bronze sculpture fittingly depicts the club’s longtime third baseman at the plate. Dressed in his Royals uniform, with his bat cocked in his hands and his eyes focused on the incoming pitch, Brett picks up his right foot, beginning his hitting stride. In 2009, after Kauffman Stadium underwent significant renovations, the organization moved the statue inside the ballpark to the new right centerfield concourse.

George Brett Statue

Ewing Marion Kauffman was born on his family’s farm on September 21, 1916 near Garden City, Missouri. His father was a farmer of German ancestry. His mother was a schoolteacher. When Kauffman was still young, his father gave up farming and moved the family to Kansas City after flooding destroyed his crops in three consecutive years and an accident robbed him of sight in one eye. There, his father struggled selling insurance, while his mother took in boarders. With his family eking out an existence, the young Kauffman sold eggs from his grandparents’ farm to supplement the family’s income, an early foray into sales that would pay dividends in the future. Later, he attended the city’s Westport High School, where he played on the school’s football team. After graduating from high school in 1934, Kauffman briefly rode the rails and hitchhiked across the country before returning home and earning an associate’s degree in business from the Junior College of Kansas City two years later. In December 1941, he married Marguerite Blackshire, whom he met at Sunday school. About a month later, as the country mobilized for war, Kauffman joined the U.S. Navy, eventually becoming a signalman. In his leisure time, he plays cards with his fellow sailors, winning nearly $100,000 over the course of a few years. Kauffman later used some of the money to start the business that would transform him into a billionaire later in life.After returning home from the war, Kauffman took a job as a salesman for Lincoln Laboratories, a pharmaceutical company headquartered in Decatur, Illinois. Demonstrating a knack for sales, he quickly became the company’s most successful salesman. Believing Kauffman to be making too much money for his position, the company “rewarded” him by reducing his commission rate and shrinking his sales territory. Consequently, he decided to resign and start his own business. In 1950, with his own savings, Kauffman launched Marion Laboratories. Beginning in the basement of his home in Kansas City, the pharmaceutical company steadily grew into an industry leader, transforming Kauffman into an immensely wealthy man. In 1987, Forbes Magazine listed his net worth to be approximately $470 million. Two years later, when Marion Laboratories merged with Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals and Kauffman surrendered control of the company that he built from the ground up over nearly four decades, his stock was worth roughly $1.3 billion.While he grew his pharmaceutical company, Kauffman experienced extreme highs and lows in his personal life. In December 1960, just over a week before Christmas, his wife died unexpectedly. To cope with his grief, Kauffman threw himself into his work. The following year, while in Miami for a convention, he met a Canadian-born widow named Muriel McBrien. The daughter of a Tory politician, she was also a graduate of McMaster University who then attended Osgoode Hall Law School. The two hit it off in Miami and eventually married in February 1962.Committed to using his wealth for good and desirous of giving back to the city that gave him so much, Kauffman established the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation in 1966 to fund philanthropic endeavors in Kansas City. One such enterprise was Project STAR, a drug prevention program that taught youngsters about the dangers of drugs and peer pressure. Additionally, Kauffman allowed the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross to conduct CPR classes at Royals Stadium, which resulted in thousands of people learning the life-saving maneuver.Following the 1967 season, Charles O.
