Introduction
Text-to-speech Audio
The old Colquitt County Jail is one of the most distinctive buildings in Moultrie. Its Gothic Revival style features turrets at the top of each corner, with battlements along the top of the four walls and a tower. Built in 1915, this unique structure dons Oriental brick, terrazzo floors and Georgia granite. At the time, the Colquitt County jail was termed "the finest, best architecturally designed jail in Georgia." The jail was known as a step toward modernization in comparison with other jails. When the jail first opened, it had electric lights, steam heat, shower baths, tubs and sanitary toilets. The original gallows are still in place on the third floor.
