Church traditions says that in 1776 the organization of the Upper Holston congregation of the Presbyterian Church occurred on land owned by John Campbell in Royal Oak (now known as Marion). The congregation became known as the Royal Oak Presbyterian Church and is now currently housed in a circa 1923 Late Gothic Revival-style church.
