Students from LeMoyne College and Owen Junior College protested segregation at this Memphis library on March 19, 1960. Inspired by the sit-ins at lunch counters in Nashville and Greensboro, students and community members also attempted to integrate several lunch counters that week. 36 protesters were arrested at this library and one other branch location. At least three hundred protesters were arrested that month, most of whom were charged with "loitering"
