The name of this local establishment is a reference to the community which earned the nickname "Deep Deuce" when it was the heart of Oklahoma City's&nbsp;African American community. The district attracted many traveling&nbsp;musicians during the early years of jazz and blues music. This&nbsp;two-story brick structure was built in the 190s and is best known for owner&nbsp;W.L. Haywood who opened numerous businesses including the&nbsp;first Black hospital in Oklahoma City.&nbsp;

The Restaurant is open from 11AM-12AM so there is plenty of time to come on down for a visit. It has been said that the Deep Deuce best nights are mostly Thurs, Fri, and Sat and on Friday night’s there is live music.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Deep Deuce grill is mostly known for its historical events in Deep Deuce downtown; from live tunes to civil rights movement in Oklahoma City. The History goes back to the 1920s where the name Deep Deuce, also known as “the second” &nbsp;came from an all African-American community and an entertainment center. The district attracted many starting musicians and first time coming African-American professionals. Oklahoma City’s Deep Deuce Grill operates in a two-story brick structure built by Jimmy Rushing’s father, Andrew, and it was built in 1926, later taken over by Dr. W.L. Haywood in 1938 where he opened the first Black hospital in Oklahoma City. The building was once a place where an African-American would go to get medical help but now it’s a place where anyone can go to find great food and live entertainment.&nbsp; Who doesn’t like music? The Deep Deuce Grill was and still is a place filled with lively jazz and blues music; Started many musician careers such as Jimmy Rushing, and Charlie Christian and was visited by many other famous musicians. Jimmy rushing was an American Balladeer who loved to play the piano and was mostly known as the featured vocalist of Count Basie's Orchestra from 1945 to 1948. Charlie Christian was an American jazz guitarist who became widely known as a member of the Benny Goodman Sextet and Orchestra from August 1939 to June 1941. The Deep Deuce Grill restaurant also helped initiate Jazz music Jazz music started here in the Deep Deuce district and the tradition continues to this present day.&nbsp; The Deep Deuce Grill restaurant, once known as The Haywood Building, was constructed by Dr. W. L. Haywood in 1926 and was named after the him. Haywood was the first African-American to practice medicine at the University of Oklahoma; now known as OU Medical Center. The second floor of the building was the clinic area and his office; the first floor was the shop, where people could buy their medicine(even though back then people just put whatever in bottles and sold them). Dr. W. L Haywood and Dr. W. H Slaughter were two doctors who aided African-Americans in need of medical treatment. The Deep Deuce Grill/The Haywood Building house many historical figures along with many others who needed medical help. Now when people enter this building they will remember the history of all the lives Dr. W.L Haywood &nbsp;saved in the past.&nbsp;&nbsp;The district was a place where African-Americans could legally have a home in Oklahoma City. It was becoming a very successful neighborhood and fearing encroachment Americans felt threatened so they passed a law that forced all African-Americans to move towards the north of Brick town passed the 2nd street and prevent them from purchasing any land, which is known as deep deuce. The 2nd street came to be a place in which people protested for Civil Rights. After the civil rights movement approached, African-American spread out to new locations in Oklahoma City in the 1960s. Today the neighborhood is a home to many different people around the city.&nbsp; The Deep Deuce grill is mostly known for its historical events in Deep Deuce downtown; from live tunes to civil rights movement in Oklahoma City.
