Greenwood Cemetery
Introduction
Text-to-speech Audio
Established in 1874 as Trinity Cemetery, Greenwood Cemetery is a historic burial ground located in the Uptown neighborhood of Dallas. Many notable historical figures are buried here including cattleman Colonel C.C. Slaughter (another Clio entry), Dallas mayor Ben E. Cabell, U.S. Congressman Robert Emmet Burke. The cemetery was founded by local businessmen William H. Gaston and W.H. Thomas. At the time, it was two miles from downtown and remote. Unfortunately, the cemetery was not maintained and fell into disrepair. To remedy the situation, in 1896 the Greenwood Cemetery Association was established to take over the cemetery and continues to own it today.
