The Historic Salisbury Station was North Carolina’s rail entry to the Piedmont region and received 44 trains per day during its peak. When it opened in 1908 the Station became a centerpiece for the community and drove economical power around it. The station's magnificent waiting room and architecture led it to becme a site for filming movies and hosting events. The Station is still an active site for passenger trains, events, and film.

The Historic Salisbury Station opened its doors on a Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock in 1908. The Station quickly became vital to the Rowan community and acted as a mainline station between Washington D.C. and Atlanta, GA, becoming one of the region's major thoroughfares. With the support of the community, the station brought business and tourists to Rowan County. Locals called the station the prettiest between Washington and Atlanta.

Designed by Frank P. Milburn the station mirrored Spanish mission style with brick and ceramic tile. The station was built by the Central Carolina Construction company of Greensboro. The station's most appealing feature was the waiting room, with its high ceilings, an abundance of lights, and oak seats. The Station could entertain 100 patrons with its lunch stand and dining rooms.

The Historic Salisbury Station was recognized by the Nation Register of Historic Places in 1976 which led to the Historic Salisbury Foundation purchasing the property from the Norfolk Southern Company and North Carolina Railroad Company in 1984. The community recognized the Station for its notable history in the community and looked to improve the station and renovate the landmark.

The Historic Salisbury Foundation restored the property through three phases and worked on the project until 1996. The redeveloped Station has become a popular place in the community, hosting events such as weddings and proms. Following its removation, the station has also served as a movie set. Leatherheads released in 2008 and starring George Clooney was filmed at the station as well as the Fox TV show Shots Fired, which aired in 2017 before being cancelled.
