The Civil War in Fairfax County, Virginia
Description
Fairfax County, with its proximity to Washington, D.C. and Maryland and location in Confederate Virginia, was an important location during the Civil War. This tour tracks its history from skirmishes early in the war (including the first Confederate officer killed), to the First Battle of Bull Run, to the Union and Confederate line of defenses following the battle, to skirmishes during the winter of 1861-62, to the Battle of Chantilly following the Second Battle of Bull Run (and immediately preceding General Lee's Maryland Campaign), to Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart's and Colonel John Mosby's raids, which continued through the end of the war. While there are hundreds of Civil War-related sites in the county, this tour includes many of the most important, as well as the two Civil War museums - the Civil War Interpretive Center at Historic Blenheim and the Stuart-Mosby Civil War Cavalry Museum.
