Highlighting the documented and archived history of the African American experience at Miami University of Ohio. As one of the oldest public universities, Miami University was founded in 1809. The first students were on campus for class in 1824. In 1905, Nellie Craig was the first Black student to graduate from the University. Miami University has a rich history of prominent African American students and staff. This walking tour highlights the African American student experience. It provides stops at areas of significance for African American students and alumni such as academic buildings, athletic venues, and extracurricular spaces. Whether it be the athletic venue of Millett Hall or the home of many freshman orientation activities, the Shriver Center, Miami University is a place where friendships have been forged.
